Set a mantra or intention before you light the flame. Take a moment to ground yourself as you sit with your intention or mantra. When ready light away. Watch as the flame dances. Though you make think its to pretty to burn, it is a necessity. Allow the flame to do as it must. The teacup may crack, but that is apart of what must let go and surrender. If the flame gets out of hand place the plate on top to extinguish.
